This young Black-Tailed Deer was rescued on April 25 by a man who saw it on the side of Trout Gulch Rd. He waited for two hours for the mother to return. When she did not, he transported the fawn to NAR. The fawn is currently being bottle fed every 3-4 hours from 8am until midnight, and as soon the bottle feedings are down to two a day, the fawn will be transferred to a deer enclosure in Boulder Creek. We have found that it's better for fawns to be transferred as early as possible to provide them with more space and reduce their contact with humans. As fawns mature, the rehabber stops handling them and bottle-feeds them through a wooden feeding-station in the fence so the fawns can't see the rehabber and stops associating people with food. We always try to have at least two fawns per enclosure to reduce their focus on humans.
